Chinese New Year - Part 1
Ahh! After the Western world finished the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Eastern part of the world is getting ready for the Chinese New Year.
Growing in Taiwan, we have many traditions for our big holiday. We don't have to go to the mall or online to order any gifts for our family and friends, the only thing that mattered on the big day is to have enough red envelopes!
First - wear something red and new. It is a family tradition to wear at least one piece of new clothing, if not the whole outfit. When I think about these traditions now, I realize these are just a good excuse to buy new clothes for yourself and kids.
Wearing red is very important. The red color is believed to scare away bad evil spirits and bad luck, so we have to wear red during the NY. We also do NOT clean (taking the trash out) for at least 2-3 days from the 1st day of the year. This is ought to "preserve" all our money and fortune for the year. Also, not saying the word 4 is very important - 4 sounds like Sì which sounded like Sǐ (death). You definitely want to remember this!
Writing this blog post makes me a little home sick!
